The need for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) on proposed developments was elaborated on at the 2019 Construction Industry Council (CIC) Conference, held 13th to 15th of June 2019, at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

Opposition MP, Honourable Lenora Qereqeretabua, presented on the issue on the Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) on the last day of the conference. Hon. Qereqeretabua believes that there is much still to be done with regards to environmental approvals.

“We would do well to seek the expertise of environmental experts, activists and scientists, currently working and operating in Fiji,” she said. Hon. Qereqeretabua discussed the processes, existing laws and the current state of environmental consideration in the Construction Industry.

“I’d like those in the construction industry to go away with a greater appreciation of the considerable effect that the industry has on the environment, both directly and indirectly,” she said.
