Project Description

Our Californian-based client purchased vacant land on the beach at Maui Bay’s gated estate and commissioned Orton Architects to design their dream retirement home. In order to take full advantage of the magnificent view over the adjacent coral reef we designed the residence as a series of four pavilions linked with louvered breezeways. The site’s proximity to the sea encouraged us to ensure that water plays an integral part of the design.

A long covered walkway wends through lush tropical gardens to the entrance bridge over a shallow pool and leads through double doors into an entrance vestibule off which the open plan lounge kitchen and dining room is located. The soaring height of the mahogany ceiling over the living areas allows in south light and accentuates the spatial flow from inside to outside entertaining areas.

The salt water swimming pool has a sloping ‘beach’ access and encompasses the dining area which has the ambience of a water pavilion when the bifold doors are fully retracted. A split level master bedroom is accessed via a walkway that lies alongside a waterfall which flows under the timber bridge. The master bedroom has an open corner created by fully retracting the bifold doors and allows direct access from the bedroom to the pool.
